I've been stuck with the extra driver rate myself. I have been successful negotiating a lower rate, but renters always try to get as much as they can and you can't blame them for trying. Thanks for pointing out the astronomical insurance rate you'd be paying at $10 per day, Brian. This really puts the issue into perspective. Linda

If you are OK with paying an effective rate of $3,650 per year, then it's a fair rate.

I rent a lot of cars and have never had a problem with being assessed damage that I didn't do. In fact I always assume my insurance will cover me but have yet but it to the test. The problem I do have is paying extra, sometimes as much as $10 per day, so somebody else can drive the car if need be. I have been required to have the person with me and they hand over their insurance information. Not a problem because I don't want to worry if there is a mishap. My question is if anybody know what a fair daily charge for this is on a rental car. I think $10 per day is excessive but could be wrong.

I actually had the opposite rental car issue in 2005.

I ran over something in the road that popped the tire, and got caught in the wheel well and scratched the heck out of the rear of the car. The damage was quite visible, and I had called the rental company's roadside assistance.

When I returned the car, the damage was noted. I did not buy the insurance, although I believe (you never know how good it is) my auto insurance would have been good enough. I thought for sure I would be liable for the $500 deductable through Lord-only-knows-how-much.

In the five years that followed, we live in the same house and haven't had as much as a letter about the damage.

Yes, I am hoping too that Vegas rental places do not try these tactics because they do not have to. It is a good argument that we are more likely to encounter this stuff in smaller venues.

There was more than one story here, and I suspect this fellow will collect more.

As for basing probability on a small sample of personal experience:

I have played off my freeplay at Foxwoods now for about six years, one winter going every week and I have never hit for more than a hundred.
Wild Bill went with me last week for his second trip, and his $15 freeplay hit for $2000.
Then when they asked him to spin off the screen, he hit another hundred.

I think of car rental and bed bug disasters as similar only negative risks.

However, the best point was to take a photograph of both sides of the car, when you bring it out and when you return it, with a camera that includes the time and date in the photo, and to save your rental agreement even after they have taken the car and seemingly approved of it.

My personal solution in Vegas is as often as I can to ride the bus.
No crazy tourists drivers.
No arguments about loss of use.
No getting caught in the loss of value loophole.
And I get to drink a lot more rum that way.
