Perhaps you have already gone, but I thought I'd add that if you like microbrew you can play 9/6 JOB at the Boars Head Bar and get comped Black Chip Porter, an excellent drink.
Also, get someone to stand guard while you go in the men's room near the buffet just long enough to see urinals mounted on actual pieces of the Berlin Wall.
There are other antiques upstairs. Ask about them if that interests you. The place is full of turn of the century antiques. I think they will give you a brochure that tells about each one. One of my favorite Vegas pieces is the sculpture in the foyer of a woman holding time in her hands. The wood alone is worth seeing. And unlike much of what you see on the strip, these objects are authentic, not cheap reproductions.
Between Main Street Station and the Plaza are some interesting rail road cars as well. Teddy Roosevelt rode in one.
Oh, your comment on missing promotions is right on the money. You do have to discipline yourself not to play off the quads until the attendant sees them and gives you a scratch off. |

| Thank you for the directions to Main Street Station. I will take them with me when I go and remember to ask for a scratch ticket if I'm lucky enough to hit any quads. There have been times when I would have received a quad bonus or some other perk but didn't have advanced knowledge so I missed out. |

| We also love to play at Main Street Station -- during our trip a couple weeks ago my husband and I collected a nice handful of those 4-of-a-kind scratch-offs over about 4 hours of play. Of course they were all $2.00 tickets, but, hey -- those add up!! I can highly recommend dining at the 777 Brew Pub at Main Street Station -- the beer, brewed on the premises, is excellent (and that's according to the beer snob I'm married to) and they have a five cheese pizza that's seriously delicious!! And just as an FYI -- you can access Main Street Station easily from Fremont St. by exiting Binion's back door, ducking into the California's back door and taking the escalator to the second floor where there's a bridge over the street to Main Street Station. Very little outside time. |

| Thanks for the advice and I will do that Vic. I have heard a lot of good things about Main Street Station on forums and elsewhere but never get around to playing there. I will definitely make it a point to go there even though I will make sure it's during the day. I didn't realize they still had the scratch tickets I had heard about several years ago. Glad that some casinos are staying with traditional good plays that made them popular with video poker players. |

Get out from "under the glass" and make the quick and easy walk over to Main Street Station. It has the best overall VP downtown. I play there more than any other downtown location. For each quad you hit, flip on the light and the attendant will bring you a scratch off card for $2-$5,000. It's a nice bonus. If you miss playing coin droppers, they have them there as well as TITO. |

| The Lady Luck closed in February 2006. In recent weeks there have been some rumblings about a redevelopment and reopening - we'll see if that pans out. I also enjoy downtown, I try to get there at least once every trip. |

Downtown Vegas is definitely a lively place! I realize that not everybody likes the frenetic nightly street scene under the electronic canopy, but I'm with Cyn. To me it's a bunch of fun to listen to the music and dance in the streets. Love the eclectic music choices--70's, 80's, latest, jazz and more.
Definitely see the appeal of table poker in old school casinos--it won't be there forever and we'll all be saying "I remember when---". Personally would choose Downtown over fancy Strip for a poker game, just like mjames, who wrote:
| Quote: | Although I dabbled downtown when I visited Vegas for five-plus days in April 2009, it wasn't until the poker weekend with the boys in November 2009 that we spent the majority of our time downtown (stayed at the Golden Gate).
This year's poker trip is the weekend of September 10th and we will be staying at Fitzgeralds. Although I really could do without the Fremont Street Experience, I do like that all of the casinos abutt the sidewalk, making casino-hopping much easier than on the Strip (yes, I know that casino owners don't want you to hop - which is one of the reasons that Strip casinos are set far back from the road - but I really don't care what they think.
In September, we may spend part of an evening on the Strip, but most of our time will be spent downtown. |
Have to be honest and admit I wish I had the guts to spend a night at Golden Gate, but too fearful of critters. Probably not any at the GG and there will come a day when I fervently wish I had the experience; a real piece of Vegas history.

I, too, love the GN, especially the pool area as noted by ACDUC. Very relaxing with a wonderful aquarium and bars. It really has the old time charm and glamor of Vegas past. The canopy was a brilliant idea--makes the place more contained and gives me a feeling of security. Others feel the same.
I always like to check out Neonopolis while Downtown--wonderful neons of gone by days as well as a fun memorabilia store. Like getting souvenirs from that iconic shop.
Be aware that the 4 Queens has an excellent progressive 10/7 Double Bonus (10/7 DB) quarter video poker game. Love that play since it earned me a same day discretionary comp and now I'm on their mailing list. Free room offers, free play, food comps and so on come regularly. Haven't taken them up on it but I will. Really need to spend a night Downtown while it still has the authentic Vegas feel.
I always make it a point to make a trip Downtown every time I'm in Vegas. To be honest, given the choice of a room at Aria or the Downtown Nugget, there would be no contest--GN all the way!
Thanks, Cyn, for reminding us of how uniquely charming Downtown Vegas remains. Linda |
